Prepare yourself to experience Bowen’s challenging mountain trail race

The Handloggers Half Marathon is a formidable 21 km trail run race around Mt. Gardner. If you are ready to commit to achieving this personal goal and want to feel well prepared, this training program is designed specifically for you. The intention is to help you build your strength and fitness in stages while remaining injury free. Training with a group is a great way to stay inspired and encourage each other on your journey.

For this 14-week training program, you will be provided with a comprehensive training schedule developed by experienced trail runners. Each weekly clinic will include coaching advice and tips with a technical focus such as:

• Wearing the right shoes
• Developing good form
• Finding your tempo
• Staying nourished
• Safety precautions when running in backcountry
• Negotiating technical terrain
• Trail etiquette
• Preparing for race day

You will be introduced to a variety of trails on Bowen during your training, so check your schedule carefully each week to note your meeting location.

Mystery Fun Adventure

Take a chance on doing something unexpected right in your own backyard

In this adventure, you won’t actually find out what the activity is until you show up on the day. By definition, adventure means “to take the risk”. And while this means many things to many people, there’s nothing more adventurous than saying yes to the unknown.

In the spirit of fun, we put on our thinking caps (or in Baz’s case, his cowboy hat) and dreamed up a variety of people-powered adventures that highlight Bowen’s natural gifts and share some of our favourite Bowen experiences. Some activities are physically challenging, some are awe-inspiring, and some are educational – most are all of the above. For each outing, we will choose a unique adventure most suitable to the conditions and time of year. Or it might just be what feels fun in the moment.

This is an opportunity to get outside your comfort zone (at least out of your house) and open yourself up to whatever exciting experience awaits you. You might discover lesser explored regions of the island or try something you’ve never before imagined yourself doing.

While we cannot guarantee what your experience will be (it’s an adventure, after all), the probable outcomes include:

• Remembering that life is supposed to be fun (even in the difficult moments)
• Learning something new
• A greater appreciation for the outdoors
• A sense of freedom
• A physical workout
• Boosted energy
• Fulfillment and the feeling of accomplishment

Sometimes it takes a mountain to remind you what you are capable of

When I first moved to Bowen, I would stare up at the peak of Mt. Gardner and think “one day”. It took two long years before one day came. I began to prepare myself for the journey in stages. I started with short hikes. Then I began to take longer and more challenging trails. And even though I was becoming physically prepared, I still felt intimidated by the unknowns. Then something wonderful happened. Someone who had been up the trail before invited me to join her on the mountain. My first time up Mt. Gardner was a significant personal achievement. I danced at the top and soaked in the glorious view. After that, I gained the confidence to do it again and eventually would hike it on my own. Since then, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve visited the summit of Mt. Gardner. 75? 100? More? And each time is its own adventure. And each time it’s magic.

Mt. Gardner is a sacred place. It has an energy that is soothing to the soul. It’s mystical forests are enchanting. Its varied terrain captures your heart. From every trek, you will return a new being.

If you’ve ever attempted to hike the trail but found it physically daunting or simply wished you had an adventure buddy at your side, this experience is for you. Over a period of 4 months, we will work our way up to the summit in stages. We will take it slow and easy to start, gradually working up to the final stage which is to dance together on the summit. Along the way you will learn valuable skills to be prepared and keep you safe on the mountain. These are key to enjoying yourself in the outdoors.
